Camp Sunshine Endowment Fund

The Camp Sunshine Endowment Fund allows us to further the mission of Camp Sunshine by providing funding for scholarships, some operating funds, and other financial needs well into the future by creating a lasting account that supports the camp through its financial dividends. These funds, well invested, will produce funding for the future and support the advancement of the Camp Sunshine mission.

Lana Antvelink - March 6,1969 -- March 14, 2002

Lana Antvelink attended Camp Sunshine from it's beginning in 1983. For the next almost twenty years, once her birthday was over on March 6, she would begin the countdown until Camp Sunshine, which was usually held in August. She was once asked, "What is your favorite thing about Camp Sunshine?" She answered " I can't think of one thing because I like everything!"

When Lana was at camp, her parents knew that she was being cared for and loved by the staff and counselors who serve on a one to one ratio with each special camper. The Camp Sunshine volunteers are there because of their love for these special individuals. Lana was loved for who she was, her abilities were important not her disability.

One of the highlights of her week was the Talent Show, when each camper could do what they liked best. Lana loved to dance.....and she was free to dance without her mother there to inhibit her. As it became more difficult for her because of her heart problems, the staff would still let her dance but would limit her time.

Contributions to the Lana Antvelink Endowment Fund will help others that love Camp Sunshine, like Lana did, go to Camp Sunshine each year.

John Bouwman - May 21, 1948 -- September 26, 2006

John was born May 21, 1948 to John and Bertha Bouwman in Holland, Michigan. In 1953, the Children's Retreat and Training School opened for children with disabilities in Cutlerville. At the age of five, John began his first year of schooling. He attended this excellent school until the age of eighteen and then worked at a sheltered workshop on the Pine Rest campus for a couple of years. Once the State of Michigan required public education for all people with disabilities until the age of twenty-six, John began education at the West Ottawa Schools. He loved school, and couldn't wait for Mondays and another week with his teachers and friends.

At twenty-six years of age, John began his work career at Kandu Industries in Holland. Each day was a special day for John as he loved his work and people with whom he worked. When John was diagnosed with Alzheimer's the summer of 2004, he still was able to attend Camp Sunshine. It was a difficult time for him but he would not give up.

John had a full and happy life and took great pleasure in playing such an active role. He loved people and made no distinctions. He loved Jesus, and his life was a testimony to this unconditional love. He is now free from the Alzheimer's disease, and lives now and forever, as he always did, in the fullness of God's love.

This fund is being established in memory of John G. Bouwman who was a Camp Sunshine camper for twenty two years. John loved Camp Sunshine and yearly pointed toward this time in his life. His family is seeking to establish an initial $10,000 Endowment Fund to be located in the Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area.

This dedicated fund will provide scholarships and special camp events so that others can experience what John came to value so deeply. It is hoped that many other campers will come to know and love Camp Sunshine because of the gifts provided from the John G. Bouwman Camp Sunshine Endowment Scholarship Fund.

John loved special events. Elephants, horses, talent shows, themed character appearances, dancers, and many other events were all part of the cherished memories of Camp Sunshine. This Endowment Fund will help finance the special events that create the excitement of such unique experiences and opportunities at Sunshine.
